Position Summary

We are seeking a skilled CMM Programmer & Operator with strong PC-DMIS experience to develop, run, and maintain coordinate measuring machine (CMM) programs in support of first-article inspections (FAI), in-process checks, and final inspection. This role will interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T, create robust measurement routines, analyze results, and collaborate cross-functionally to ensure product conformance and continuous improvement of dimensional quality.

Key Responsibilities

Programming & Measurement

  • Develop, validate, and optimize PC-DMIS programs for automated and manual CMM inspection across new and existing parts.
  • Select appropriate measurement strategies, fixtures, probes, angles, and alignments; build modular fixturing as needed.
  • Conduct FAI, in-process, receiving, and final inspections per drawings, models, and customer/industry standards.
  • Perform feature-based and model-based inspection (2D/3D), including profile, true position, flatness, parallelism, runout, and other GD&T controls.
  • Create and maintain program libraries with version control and standard work instructions.

Quality Data & Reporting

  • Generate clear, traceable inspection reports (PC-DMIS, Excel, PDF) and ballooned drawings; maintain records to support ISO/AS/ITAR or customer requirements.
  • Investigate nonconformances; perform measurement system analysis (MSA), GR&R, and capability studies.
  • Support PPAP/AS9102/FAI documentation, corrective actions (8D, DMAIC), and continuous improvement initiatives.

Equipment & Calibration

  • Calibrate, qualify, and maintain CMMs, probes, stylus configurations, and reference artifacts; perform basic troubleshooting.
  • Coordinate vendor service and preventive maintenance; maintain gage R&R and calibration recall schedules.

Collaboration & Coaching

  • Partner with Quality, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Supplier Quality to clarify requirements and improve manufacturability.
  • Train operators/inspectors on program usage, fixturing, and inspection best practices; promote safety and 5S in the metrology lab.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years hands-on CMM programming and operation with PC-DMIS (CAD++ preferred).
  • Proven ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience inspecting tight tolerance features for precision components (e.g., aerospace, medical, defense, automotive).
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD model-based definition (MBD) and importing CAD into PC-DMIS.
  • Strong analytical skills with a practical understanding of MSA/GR&R and statistical concepts (Cp, Cpk beneficial).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel/Word for data analysis and reporting.
  • Strong documentation discipline and ability to work in a fast-paced, high-mix environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with additional metrology tools: vision systems, laser scanners, portable CMM/arms (e.g., FARO), surface plates, height gages, optical comparators.
  • Familiarity with AS9100/ISO 9001, PPAP, AS9145/APQP, and AS9102 FAI.
  • Background in CNC manufacturing processes (turning, milling, grinding) and process capability.
  • Exposure to SPC, Minitab (or similar), and database/report automation.
  • Experience with other CMM software (e.g., Calypso, MODUS, QxSoft CMM-Manager) is a plus.

Core Competencies

  • Metrology Expertise: Deep understanding of GD&T, probing strategies, alignments, and error sources.
  • Problem Solving: Root-cause analysis and practical countermeasures.
  • Detail Orientation: Accuracy under time constraints; rigorous documentation.
  • Collaboration: Clear communication with engineering, production, and suppliers.
  • Continuous Improvement Mindset: Standardization, cycle-time reductions, and first-pass yield improvement.

Tools & Technologies

  • CMM hardware: Hexagon/Brown & Sharpe/Zeiss/Mitutoyo.
  • Software: PC-DMIS (required), CAD viewer, ERP/MES/QMS, MS Office (Excel/Word/Teams).
  • Gaging: Micrometers, calipers, bore gages, pin gages, indicators, ring/plug gages, height gages.

Education

  • Associate's degree in Metrology, Manufacturing, Mechanical Technology, or related field; or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Relevant certifications a plus (e.g., ASQ CQI/CQT, Hexagon PC-DMIS training).

Physical & Work Conditions

  • Ability to stand, bend, and lift up to ~40 lbs, and handle medium-sized parts and fixtures safely.
  • Work in lab and production floor environments; use of PPE as required.
  • May require off-shift coverage for new program prove-outs or urgent inspections.

Success Metrics (KPIs)

  • On-time completion of FAIs and inspection lots.
  • First-pass yield of programs (minimal re-runs due to program errors).
  • Reduction in CMM cycle time for repeat parts.
  • Audit readiness and zero major findings on metrology records.
  • Effective closure of measurement-related NCRs and CAPAs.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Pay range: $40-$45 per hour (DOE), plus shift differential if applicable.
  • Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, 401(k), paid time off, and other company benefits.
